The online master’s degree in transformational leadership at UMGC immerses you into a learning environment that facilitates your transition to the civilian workforce. This distinctive master’s degree program is designed to help you build on and maximize your military leadership training and skills to prepare you to transition to corporate, nonprofit, or government organizations.

Each course offers you practical experience by using workplace scenarios to apply your strategic-thinking and decision-making skills in both group and individual activities with civilian organizations. You “learn by doing” and graduate better prepared for workplace opportunities. The experience, transformational leadership strategies, and techniques that you’ll gain may enable you to effect change at the individual, group, and organizational levels and prepare you for positions in civilian organizations.

This program requires a total of 36 credits. Take the following courses in the order listed:

Foundation Course

Core Courses

Capstone Course

  • (6 Credits, TLP 670)

  • You must complete each course with a grade of B or better to advance to the next course. 
  • The grade of C is not available for these courses.
  • The courses in this program will have seven-day and 60-day options for the grade of Incomplete.

Accelerated Pathway

If you completed your undergraduate degree at UMGC with a major in cybersecurity technology, an accelerated  pathway between UMGC undergraduate and graduate programs in cybersecurity allows you to earn 6 credits toward the following programs:

To be eligible for the pathway, you must enroll in a related graduate program within two years of completing Current Trends and Projects in Computer Networks and Cybersecurity (3 Credits, CMIT 495).

If eligible, you may be awarded credit for the introductory course in the specified graduate program—either Communicating, Problem-Solving, and Leading in Cybersecurity (6 Credits, CBR 600) or Decisive Thinking, Communicating, and Leading in Technology Fields (6 Credits, DCL 600T). You may only earn credit for one course through this accelerated pathway.

Gain Career-Focused Experience with an MS in Transformational Leadership

The UMGC online master’s degree in transformational leadership is specifically designed to help military students successfully transition into the civilian workforce. The program leverages industry partnerships to give you an opportunity to contribute to businesses through change management programs and assess your leadership strengths and weaknesses in a classroom setting.  

Our program directors refresh and update the curriculum regularly, with a focus on helping students achieve the following:

Practice Real-World Skills in Your Courses

Throughout your curriculum, your instructors will assign coursework that will provide real-world solutions to help you transition from your military service to a civilian career. In past courses, students in this program have been able to complete the following course projects:

  • Complete an organizational scan that introduces leadership theories and how they are applied in different organizational sectors.
  • Assess your own leadership style through a “Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire" and create an individual development plan considering self-reflection, emotional intelligence, and self-development strategies.
  • Create a career portfolio that contains written and oral responses to mock interview questions to demonstrate your decision-making and strategic relationship skills.
  • Create an action plan for your first 90 days on the job.
