Take 12 credits of language coursework and 12 credits in related history, language, or literature.

Within the overall outcomes of the AA degree in General Studies, the focused elective area in foreign language area studies will help you develop intermediate foreign language skills and related cultural knowledge in a variety of personal and professional settings.

If you have previous experience in the foreign language you wish to study, contact your academic advisor or languages@umgc.edu about a placement test.

Courses in the Curriculum Area (25 Credits)

  • One 3-credit course in communication, writing, or speech, chosen from the following:
    • (3 Credits, ENGL 102)
    • (3 Credits, ENGL 281)
    • (3 Credits, JOUR 201)
    • Any 3-credit COMM or SPCH courses
    • Any 3-credit WRTG courses (except 486A and 486B)
  • One 1-credit course, chosen from the following:
    • (1 Credit, CAPL 198A)
    • (1 Credit, CAPL 198B)
    • (1 Credit, CAPL 198C)
    • (1 Credit, BMGT 121A)
    • (1 Credit, BMGT 121B)
    • Any 1-credit course
  • Suggested Focus Elective Area Courses:
    • Language core courses (12 credits)—Sequential courses in a single language, usually numbered 111–112 and 114–115 (or 211–212) (Specific course sequences for each language follow)
    • Related area studies courses (9 credits)—Any courses in the culture, history, language, literature, or government and politics of the area (see specific courses for each language area)
    • Please note: If you select to follow one of the suggested focused elective areas, any transfer credit you have earned that does not transfer as a general education requirement will be used in the focused elective area thus possibly reducing the number of specific focused courses that will be available for your degree plan. General Education Requirements (35 Credits)

Since some recommended courses fulfill more than one requirement, substituting courses for those listed may require you to take additional courses to meet degree requirements. Consult your academic advisor whenever taking advantage of other options.
