May 14, 2027 at 12:00 PM — I Who Have Never Known Men by Jacqueline Harpman
A haunting dystopian novel that has found a new generation of devoted readers, I Who Have Never Known Men follows a nameless young woman who has spent her entire remembered life imprisoned underground with thirty-nine older women. Unlike her companions, she has no memories of family, love, or the world before captivity. When the guards suddenly disappear and the women escape into a strange, seemingly empty world, their search for answers becomes a profound exploration of survival, community, loneliness, and freedom. Mysterious and deeply philosophical, Harpman’s novel asks what it means to build a life—and an identity—when almost everything we normally use to define ourselves has been taken away.
The novel has also experienced a striking revival: The New Yorker reports that a reissue sold 100,000 copies in the U.S. in 2024, fueled in part by a younger generation discovering it on TikTok.
