Designed with input from employers, industry leaders, and faculty, our curriculum centers on ecosystem-based environmental management as it pertains to today’s most pressing environmental challenges. The program is built for individuals looking to enter or advance their careers in this growing field, and will help provide you with critical, real-world expertise in environmental policy, stakeholder engagement, auditing, risk assessment, and managing environmental systems. By assessing water, land, air, and climate systems and applying knowledge from a range of disciplines, you will learn how to formulate holistic, viable solutions to environmental problems threatening our ecosystems and natural resources.

  • (3 Credits, ENVM 615) is prerequisite or corequisite for all subsequent ENVM courses.
  • You must complete 27 credits of program coursework before enrolling in (3 Credits, ENVM 670) .

General Master's Degree Requirements

  • You must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher at all times.
  • All degree requirements must be fulfilled within five consecutive years.
  • Any transfer credits must have been earned within the above five-year time frame to be applied toward a graduate degree.

Courses in this program emphasize environmental policy, communications and reporting, waste management, risk assessment, environmental economics, project management, land use management, energy policy, environmental sustainability, and more. This environmental management degree program is designed to help prepare you for high-level roles in government agencies; industrial, commercial, non-profit, non-governmental, and military organizations; and more. At UMGC, you can progress at your own pace, network with your peers, and learn from instructors and industry leaders who currently work in the field. Our graduates may pursue careers in environment and safety analysis, sustainability management, environmental policy analysis, environmental science, climate change, and more.

We recommend an undergraduate course each in biology or chemistry; prior experience in an environmental field is also helpful. Strong writing skills are also encouraged.

Environmental Awareness Club

The Environmental Awareness Club offers opportunities to interact with a variety of environmental professionals. Activities have included webinars with professionals and alumni in the field, field trips, assisting in local cleanups, newsletters, and a P3 grant competition. It is available to graduate or undergraduate students, alumni, faculty, and staff members. Students and alumni can join the Environmental Awareness Club group on CareerQuest.
