The online master’s in management specialization in emergency management at University of Maryland Global Campus will prepare you to plan and respond to natural and human-made disasters and emergencies in the United States. In this specialization, you’ll study the use of advanced technologies, emerging cyber and asymmetric threats, digital communication systems, global pandemic response and recovery, climate adaptation, continuity of operations, public and private partnerships, laws and policies, and ethical considerations in emergency management decision-making and planning. You’ll develop the practical skills needed for security risk assessments, strategic planning and prevention, staff coordination, deterrence, mitigation, protection, response, and operational recovery and design strategies and processes to secure individuals and critical infrastructure from natural and human-made threats.

  • (6 Credits, MGMT 630) (or (3 Credits, MGMT 610)) must be taken within the first 6 credits.
    • (3 Credits, MGMT 610) and (3 Credits, MGMT 615) may be taken instead of (6 Credits, MGMT 630).
  • (3 Credits, MGMT 640) should not be attempted simultaneously with (3 Credits, MGMT 650).
  • (3 Credits, EMAN 600) must be taken as one of the first two specialization courses.
  • (3 Credits, EMAN 670) must be taken in your last semester.
  • You must complete 24 credits of program coursework, including all core courses, before enrolling in (3 Credits, MGMT 670).

General Master's Degree Requirements

  • You must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or higher at all times.
  • All degree requirements must be fulfilled within five consecutive years.
  • Any transfer credits must have been earned within the above five-year time frame to be applied toward a graduate degree.

Accelerated Pathway

If you completed your undergraduate degree at UMGC with coursework in emergency management, an accelerated pathway between UMGC's graduate and undergraduate degree programs in this field may allow you to reduce your total coursework for this program by up to 6 credits.

We recommend a recent background in finance or accounting, as well as statistics. Strong writing skills are also encouraged.

The Public Safety Student Association encourages discussions on careers, current events, and topics within the public safety field. Activities have included webinars on related topics and careers.
