UMGC Military Community Writers

Join us in sharing your stories, your knowledge, and your humanity.

"The thing about a story is that you dream it as you tell it, hoping that others might then dream along with you…"

-Tim O’Brien, The Things They Carried

Tell your story

Storytelling is at the heart of UMGC’s Military Community Writers’ (MCW) mission to promote, nurture, and advocate for a community of writers who will share their stories, their knowledge, and their humanity. Generations of war veterans have used fiction, poetry, and memoir to tell their stories, transforming traumatic memories and war experiences into fictionally truthful renderings or into memoirs that simultaneously preserve and narrate factual accounts. Today’s Global War on Terrorism veterans are following this tradition.

UMGC’s Military Community Writers

  • Focus on creative writing as a means of sharing experiences
  • Advocate for writing practice and publication
  • Use writing to strengthen bonds across the UMGC military community

We support members who seek creative, professional, and personal writing support as well as publication outlets. It is also our hope that bonds formed through shared writing practice and publication opportunities will lead to new writing skills as well as to newfound personal resources.

We welcome students who are

  • Active-duty military
  • Military veterans
  • Military family members

These pages serve as a gateway through which face-to-face groups from Europe may connect with each other and with outside resource groups for writing support. It is our hope that you will join us as we share our stories, our poems, and our experiences.

"But this too is true: stories can save us … in a story, which is a kind of dreaming, the dead sometimes smile and sit up and return to the world."

-Tim O’Brien, The Things They Carried
