Social Work Additional Admission Requirements

Admission Criteria—Regular Program*

Applicants to the 62 credit MSW program must submit the following items to the Salisbury University Social Work Department: 

1. Official transcripts from all undergraduate institutions attended, including the transcript indicating completion of a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
   
   Transcripts are required to be sent directly from the academic institution attended to SU:
   
   Salisbury University
   Office of Graduate Studies and Research

   Salisbury, MD 21801
    
2. In addition to the UMGC Europe online application, the MSW application.
3. Professional/Academic Recommendation
   Three letters of recommendation are required and should be submitted using the Professional/Academic Recommendation form. The Right of Access section on the form must be completed and signed prior to submitting to the recommender. One reference from an academic source is required and it is strongly suggested that the other two be from an employer and a professional colleague or community associate. Please do not include recommendations from friends or relatives.

Prerequisites for Admission

• A bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited college or university.
• Successful completion (a grade of “C” or better) of a minimum of 24 hours of liberal arts, including at least one course in sociology, psychology, English, and political science or history. These undergraduate requirements may be taken at any accredited college or university, including community colleges.
• A course in introductory statistics is required.
• All prerequisites for admission must be completed before the start of the second term in the program. All offers of admission are conditional upon the successful completion of the required undergraduate coursework. 
• A minimum 3.0 GPA in upper division courses and a 3.0 GPA in the 120 credits leading to the bachelor’s degree is required. If an applicant has a 2.5 to 3.0 GPA in the 120 credits leading to the bachelor’s degree, but an otherwise strong application, consideration will be given for provisional admission. 
• Previous graduate credits are considered when assessing your qualifications. 

Conditional/Provisional Admission

Conditional or provisional admission may be granted to applicants in the following categories: 

• Those who have not successfully completed the required liberal arts background may be admitted conditionally.
  
  Students found to have a deficiency in the area of liberal arts preparation will be required to take leveling courses to satisfy the prerequisite requirement prior to admission or during their first semester in the program. The Admissions Review Committee reserves the right to request that students retake a liberal arts course in which a grade below a “C” was earned. Students must submit proof of successful completion of the course to be fully admitted to the program. 
• All prerequisites for admission must be completed prior to the start of the second semester in the program. Statistics may be taken on a pass/fail basis; all other prerequisite courses must be graded. Students may take these courses at any accredited university or community college.
• Those with a GPA of less than 3.0, but an otherwise strong application, may be admitted provisionally. Students admitted provisionally based on their GPA may take up to 9 credits their first semester (excluding field courses), and are required to earn a “B” or better in all classes their first term of the program. Students who meet this requirement will be fully admitted to the regular program the following term.
