Eligibility

Members of the U.S. Armed Forces, American employees of the U.S. government, and their family members located in a contract country may enroll in undergraduate courses through University of Maryland Global Campus Europe if they meet admission requirements. U.S. military policy requires a valid identification privilege card issued by the military services. Card validation is required after completing the online application. All eligibility questions should be directed to the Student Services Office (studentservices-europe@umgc.edu) at the UMGC Europe Headquarters.

Orientation and Getting Started

Local UMGC representatives and academic advisors stand ready in military communities to provide you with on-site assistance with admissions, registration, financial aid, advising appointments, and more.

Before the beginning of each session, UMGC holds special online webinars and on-site orientations for new and prospective students. At these events, you have the opportunity to learn about UMGC and its programs, student services, academic and career options, and meet faculty members and fellow students. When you participate in these special events, you may have your application fee waived.

New Undergraduate Admissions Criteria for Regular Status Students

In order to be eligible for admission to UMGC as a regular student, you must fulfill one of the following academic requirements:

  • Graduation from a state-approved or regionally accredited high school (including DoDEA overseas high school)

  • Passing scores on a state high school equivalency exam, such as the General Educational Development (GED) test

  • Graduation from a homeschool or alternative high school program in compliance with state and local education regulations in the state where you were homeschooled or attended an alternative high school 

  • Graduation from a non-U.S. high school with credential evaluated as equivalent to a U.S. high school diploma by an independent approved agency. 

Information about how high school students may enroll as concurrent high school students is found below. Contact your local UMGC representatives for additional information on the criteria. 

If you have not completed high school, you can meet UMGC regular admission requirements by completing an associate's degree from an accredited postsecondary institution or at least 60 credits from an accredited postsecondary institution with at least a 2.0 GPA (on a 4.0 scale).

You must complete and sign your application and pay the application fee.

Visiting/Consortium

Colleges and universities serving the military overseas work together as a consortium. If you are seeking a certificate or degree with a consortium institution, you can enroll in a limited number of courses with other consortium institutions without paying an additional application fee. These courses must be (a) needed for you to complete your certificate or degree requirements and (b) unavailable from the institution at which you are seeking to earn your certificate or degree. 

Note:  UMGC Asia and UMGC Europe extend consortium status to Community College of the Air Force (CCAF) students.

If you are a visiting consortium student, you must apply online to UMGC as a consortium student and submit an Application Fee Waiver Request at your local UMGC office after applying in order to have your application fee waived. As a visiting student, you are not required to submit your high school transcripts.

New Admission Criteria for Provisional Status Students

You may be eligible for admission to UMGC as a provisional student if you fall under the following category:

  • You are currently attending a U.S. regionally accredited or state-approved high school and plan to enroll concurrently at UMGC; you must be at least 13 years old to apply

As a provisional student, you may enroll for a maximum of 7 credits during a fall, spring, or summer term. After graduating from high school, you may request a change to regular status by contacting  Student Services Office (studentservices-europe@umgc.edu).

You may be admitted as a provisional student if you provide prior written permission from the appropriate officials at your high school and a high school transcript reflecting superior scholarship and college readiness, as determined by UMGC in its review of this documentation. If you are currently being homeschooled or attending an alternative high school program, you may qualify for concurrent enrollment if your homeschool or alternative high school program complies with applicable state and local education regulations. As a concurrently enrolled student, you are assigned nondegree-seeking status. 

Applicants Educated Primarily in Another Language

If you were educated abroad in a language other than English, follow our simple steps and guidelines below to get started on your University of Maryland Global Campus education.

Secondary Education (High School Graduation)

If you have earned fewer than 30 credits (if you applied to UMGC on or after March 30, 2020) at a U.S. college or university, you must verify your completion of the equivalent of a U.S. secondary education by doing one of the following:

  • Request an evaluation from one of these approved international credit evaluation service
  • Provide official transcripts showing completion of the U.S. General Education Development, known as the GED, exam with a passing score

English Language Proficiency

To meet admission requirements, you may demonstrate English proficiency by certifying one of the following on your admission application:

  • You graduated from a state-approved or regionally accredited U.S. high school, homeschool, or alternative high school or earned a passing score on a U.S. GED test.

  • You completed high school in one of the countries listed below.

  • You earned at least 24 credits or an associate (or more advanced) degree from an accredited U.S. college or university or from a college or university in one of the countries listed at below.

If you do not demonstrate English proficiency in one of the ways listed above, you may do so by providing documentation verifying passing scores on one of the following:

  • A score of 550 or higher on the written version or 79 or higher on the online version of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL); the TOEFL score recovery code for UMGC is 5804

  • An overall score of 95 on the Duolingo English Test

  • A score of 6.5 or higher on the International English Language Testing System (IELTS); must include the academic writing and academic reading modules

  • A minimum grade of Pre-1 on the Eiken English Proficiency Exam

You must arrange to have official score reports or transcripts sent directly from the testing agency or academic institution to UMGC. UMGC will determine whether scores more than two years old may be used to meet English proficiency. All documentation should be sent by U.S. mail, UPS, or FedEX to:
