Dr. Melissa M. Donovan joined UMGC Europe as a Collegiate Professor of Mathematics & Statistics in 2020. She holds a doctorate in Mathematics and Science Education from the University of Massachusetts, Lowell. Dr. Donovan's commitment lies in transforming mathematics education into an engaging journey of problem-solving, where students uncover its intricacies and develop an appreciation for the subject. She prioritizes accessibility by integrating real-world examples that resonate with diverse learners, enhancing understanding while showcasing the relevance of mathematics in everyday life.

Dedicated to empowering all students to reach their full mathematical potential, particularly those who have experienced past educational challenges, Dr. Donovan implements timely interventions and focuses on fostering a growth mindset. As an educational inventor and didactic empiricist, she ignites a passion for mathematics in her students, guiding them towards success in their mathematical endeavors while encouraging them to become thinkers and mathematicians in their own right.

Prior to joining UMGC, Dr. Donovan's educational journey began as a high school teacher, where she refined her skills as a math educator at Mt. Blue High School in Farmington, Maine. During her tenure, she not only shared mathematical knowledge but also instilled a love for learning in her students.

Transitioning into higher education, she's held positions as faculty, teaching for several institutes of higher education and later serving as Associate Dean of Mathematics Faculty at Southern New Hampshire University. Dr. Donovan continues to be an active member of the Mathematical Association of America and contributes regularly to various special interest groups, including Research in Mathematics Education (SIG-RME), History of Mathematics (SIG-HOM), and Convergence Magazine.

Since joining UMGC- Europe she has brought her mathematical excitement and expertise to various locations, teaching in Bavaria, Germany, Aviano, and Vicenza, Italy, and most recently, in the Kaiserslautern Military Community. Beyond her professional endeavors, Dr. Donovan finds joy in exploring Europe with her family, friends, and beloved Pomeranian, Dr. Nugget, with her trusty Mini-Cooper Cabrio clocking up the miles along the way.
