Dr. Maria Wise joined the UMGC Europe Division in 2016. She has taught in the Kaiserslautern Military Community, in Bavaria, at Aviano, Italy and at Lakenheath and Mildenhall in the UK. Prior to joining UMGC, Dr. Wise taught at the Duke University Marine Laboratory and at Carteret Community College. Despite her scholarly focus in marine biology and the ecology of shallow water invertebrates, she has also taught human health and physiology courses for many years.

In her classes, Dr. Wise encourages her students to experience science and see the results of the scientific process through hands-on experiments and dissections of living rather than preserved tissues and organisms. She incorporates field trips to relevant local habitats such as coastal intertidal zones and woodlands, and science museums.

Dr. Wise loves to travel and cook. She grew up with an Italian mother, so food is an integral part of her life, and she aims to enjoy the varied cuisines from all corners of the globe, even if her go-to favorites are all Italian-based. She is an avid outdoorsy person and likes to hike, bike, swim and scuba dive whenever she has the chance. Travel is a must, and it satisfies her insatiable wanderlust.
