Since 2014, Dr. Malia McCarrick has taught for UMGC in Asia, Downrange, and Europe, viewing her role in the university classroom as that of a coach who has the privilege of passing on knowledge, skills, and the traditions of higher education. As founder of both The Writing Doctor and the UMGC Movie Club, Dr. McCarrick also focuses on creating new avenues of academic engagement for members of both the university and military communities.

Prior to academia, Dr. McCarrick spent 12 years as a radio personality and freelance writer in West Michigan. Her research and creative interests include British Victorian and Modern literature, LGBT literature, Queer Theory, narratology, creative nonfiction, long fiction, and poetry. She’s taught in colleges and universities in Michigan, Hawaii, and Florida.

When classes are not in session, one can usually find Dr. McCarrick leaving a trail of Cheetos behind in airports around the world as she continues her quest for adventure. She insists there’s still time to win that elusive Academy Award – she’s not too picky about the category – and vows to one day open a beagle rescue somewhere in the South Pacific.
