Professor John Barbato states that one of the advantages of being a military "family member" all his life is that he has lived, worked, studied, and taught all over the world. In fact, during his 34 years with UMGC, he has deployed many times to such places as Bosnia, Uruguay, Kosovo and Afghanistan (it's not just a job!)."
His first few jobs after getting his undergraduate degree were in Human Resource Management for high-tech companies that made chips (computer, not potato). He then earned his MBA in International Business & Marketing from the University of Colorado. During his time in graduate school, he first taught courses at the graduate level as a graduate teaching fellow, sparking his interest in teaching as a career.
John teaches in both the graduate and undergraduate programs. He teaches primarily business-related classes and has also taught classes in the Speech, Women’s Studies, and Venture Management programs. He notes that, "There are some great aspects of teaching and, like any job (or marriage); the dynamic challenges allow me to grow in so many ways. The test is that the grass is still the greenest on my side of the fence." In addition to teaching, he is an organizational consultant.
The important thing to understand about John is that he thinks it is important for everyone to always quest to know and understand himself or herself better. Each class should be a means to realize personal and professional goals. It is something he tries to assist his students to understand and realize. John's continuous lifetime personal and professional philosophy are the same as he has for the students in his classroom, 'to have FUN' meaning to learn and to laugh."
