I've been teaching for UMGC since 2000, first in Iceland, followed by nearly two decades in Germany, and now in the UK. I am active as both a poet and art historian, and my writing and research has been supported by the Fulbright Program, the National Endowment for the Humanities, MacDowell, Millay Arts, and the American Academy in Rome.
I began teaching for UMGC while living in Reykjavik, conducting research, curating, and serving on a fifteen-member team in charge of preparing a five-volume History of Icelandic Art (National Gallery of Iceland, 2011). Since then, my essays on global contemporary art have appeared in academic journals, art magazines, and museum catalogues. In addition, I have published two books of poetry, Reading Emily Dickinson in Icelandic (Kore Press) and Drawing Water (Noctuary Press). Literary honors include the Discovery/ The Nation Prize and the Poetry Society of America's Emily Dickinson Award.
Teaching for UMGC is rewarding and invigorating. I appreciate the range of experiences and perspectives UMGC students bring to the classroom, and I strive to help my students frame and more deeply understand their own experiences and traditions within larger cultural and professional contexts.
