For over 36 years, I taught English Language and Literature in Italy's Classical and Scientific High Schools under the Italian Ministry of Education, dedicating my career to helping young people appreciate the richness of literary, historical, and cultural heritage. At the same time, I had the privilege of teaching Italian language, Italian life and culture, and the history and culture of Naples to American students studying abroad in Naples. I also taught Italian Language and Culture at the University of La Verne in California, where I introduced students to the complexity and diversity of Italian civilization.
My teaching has always been guided by the belief that the best way to understand Italy is to experience it beyond the clichés. I encourage students to discover the country's extraordinary cultural depth by exploring its history, traditions, literature, art, and everyday life. Rather than presenting Italy as a single, uniform nation, I emphasize its identity as a vibrant mosaic of regions, each with its own unique character, customs, dialects, and historical legacy.
An essential part of my teaching has been leading educational visits through Naples, Pompeii, and Herculaneum. These experiences allow students to see firsthand how the ancient and modern worlds coexist in a landscape shaped by nearly three thousand years of continuous history. By connecting archaeological sites, architecture, local traditions, and contemporary society, I help students develop a deeper understanding of Italy's enduring cultural legacy and leave with a richer, more authentic appreciation of the country and its people.
