Professor Ashley Romain joined UMGC in 2002, teaching in the Asia division in locations within Japan. He transferred to the Europe division in 2003, and since then he has taught in Germany (Wiesbaden, Spangdahlem, Heidelberg, the KMC, and Baumholder), and in Italy (Vicenza and Aviano). Prior to his time with UMGC, he worked in Japan, mostly in and around Tokyo, for Tokyo Woman’s Christian University (Assistant Professor) and the British Council (Manager, Academic Services). Before moving to Japan, he taught in England at the University of Kent, and Canterbury Christ Church University.
Originally from London, Professor Romain enjoys travelling, designing teaching materials, producing video tutorials, and genealogical research, especially when it compels him to search old maps and records to find long-lost streets.
His scholarly background is in first- and second-language acquisition, and the teaching of English. He views writing as a process, and this underpins his approach to teaching. He also believes it essential that students develop their technical skills alongside their language skills in order to facilitate the preparation of documents.
