I am from Minnesota and served in the United States Navy following high school. In 1992, I moved to Boulder, Colorado to finish the undergraduate degree that I started while in the service. During my time there, I also coached men's hockey for 11 years in the ACHA (division 2).
I did my master's work in criminal justice at CU Denver's Graduate School of Public Affairs and completed my education with a Ph.D. in sociology (criminology concentration) at CU Boulder. My first faculty position was in the Justice Department at the University of Alaska Fairbanks. I have been teaching with UMGC in Bavaria for 16 years and have worked at the NATO School in Oberammergau as well as the George C. Marshall Center for European Security Studies.
In the classroom, I try to create small learning communities in each course that I teach. As a sociologist, I emphasize inequality, theory, and research methods, and I try to help students use critical thinking and multiple theoretical perspectives to analyze current problems in society. I have been teaching mostly hybrids, or online courses, in the fields of sociology, behavioral sciences, and social sciences. I hope to someday deliver criminal justice courses to students in the Garmisch military community.
