Learning and teaching present two of the most rewarding activities in my life. On a personal level, I find enjoyment and peace in reading, sports, beekeeping, and gardening. Bees are wonderful helpers in my fruit and vegetable garden, where I love to pick my meals as they grow, at least in summer. Gardening and teaching have always been parts of my adult life.
First I taught English to adults and later also to school children in Italy and Germany, where we were stationed as a military family. My teaching experience expanded as my academic career advanced. I instructed refugees for the German government as well as Business English and Business Culture courses for global companies like Japan Tobacco International and Thyssen Krupp.
Ultimately, I received opportunities to teach at the university level. I taught Education Sciences for the University of Phoenix and at the “Universität Trier.” In 2017 I joined the adjunct faculty of UMGC to teach Leadership and Business, as well as German Language and Culture courses.
Forty years of teaching experience and years of research in the effects of respect on leadership and classroom climate shape my teaching philosophy. With awareness and dedication, I embrace the opportunities as instructor not only to set the tone in the classroom but also to enhance students’ enthusiasm for learning as well as to encourage and enable them both to gain and intelligently implement knowledge. I view it my responsibility and privilege to create a respectful and safe learning environment in which students think for themselves and work together towards commendable goals.
