I have taught with UMGC Europe since October 1993. During my academic life I have worked with quite a variety of different “student bodies” because my personal life has taken me to many places I would not have dreamed of before.
I grew up in East Berlin when it was still part of East Germany. In 1984, I made it to the other side, to Heidelberg, and two years later, I moved to the US for university studies. Since then, I have been back and forth between Europe and the US. In 2009, I was a Visiting Professor at the University of California, Berkeley, and in 2016/17, I was also a Visiting Professor at Stanford University. In addition, I am a Professor of American Studies at the University of Würzburg.
Among all these students I have worked with, UMGC Europe students have a truly special place in my heart because I have met and worked with so many students that come from backgrounds that, for example, do not have the privilege of academic upbringings or the finances for higher education or enough surplus time for college studies. For me, it is a true privilege to work with UMGC students.
