Explore the influence of the Baroque art period during this field study program in Rome at UMGC Europe.

Explore an exciting artistic time of one of the most historically significant cities in the world. The Baroque period was an intriguing time of great change. It heralded the dawn of new attitudes that ultimately led to the "Age of Enlightenment" and the triumph of science over faith. The art of this period reflects an obsession with death, with a new infinite sense of space based on a larger world (discovery of America), and with the exploration of the heavens. Experience artistic masterpieces still beautifully displayed today, and understand their historical significance in the birthplace of Baroque art.

Topics Include:

  • The influence of the Baroque period in Europe
  • Counter-Reformation and how art was used by the Church
  • The "artist maudit" phenomenon
  • Visualizing the new role of art given to the classical world
