Introduction to Astronomy

ASTR 100 | 3 Credits

Course Desc: Prerequisite: MATH 105, STAT 200, or a higher MATH or STAT course. An examination of the major areas of astronomy. Topics include the solar system, stars and stellar evolution, and galaxies. Current topics in astronomy are also discussed. The objective is to use scientific and quantitative reasoning to make informed decisions about topics related to space science. Students may receive credit for only one of the following courses: ASTR 100, ASTR 101, ASTR 120, or GNSC 125.

Astronomy Laboratory

ASTR 110 | 1 Credit

Course Desc: (Fulfills the laboratory science requirement only with previous or concurrent credit for ASTR 100. Not for students majoring or minoring in science.) Prerequisite or corequisite: ASTR 100. A laboratory course including experiments, observations, and exercises to illustrate the basic concepts of astronomy, as well as the use of astronomical instruments and tools.

Special Topics in Astronomy

ASTR 398 | 3 Credits

Course Desc: Concentrated study in some limited field of astronomy that varies from semester to semester. Possible subjects for study are the solar system, extragalactic astronomy and cosmology, and the inconstant universe.

Independent Study in Astronomy

ASTR 399 | 1 - 6 Credits

Course Desc: Prerequisite: 6 credits in ASTR courses and agreement of faculty member to act as supervisor. Directed independent study of topics of special interest not covered by regularly scheduled courses in astronomy. May be repeated to a maximum of 6 credits when topics differ.
